Properties

  • Semester hours: 4.0
  • Credits: 5.0
  • Type: UE Exercise
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to ...

... to recognize and describe structures and practices of action and the associated implicit values of the field of architecture in teaching and practice that make it difficult for many people who do not conform to the classical image of an architect to practice architecture professionally. By formulating their own differentiated position, students will be able to describe conditions and design possibilities needed to make the profession equally and equitably accessible to all who wish to remain.

Subject of course

ATTENTION:

IN THE POOL APPLICATION PLEASE UPLOAD A LETTER OF MOTIVATION IN THE FORM OF A FLYER!!!:

Design a flyer against a discriminatory work culture in architecture. Think about a concrete starting point.
(Questions e.g. Who will refinance my education if I can't work without discrimination and statistically have little chance of advancement? If you are not affected yourself, put yourself in the shoes of someone who is.)
Components:
- Layout of a flyer with arguments and demands.
- On an extra sheet: Short description of the action (½ p. DIN A4), circulation, place of distribution.

WHOSE TIME(S)?
Came to Stay.

Artistic project WS 2023/2024
Claiming*Spaces Visiting Professor Karin Hartmann

Came to stay - we don't leave anymore
Came to stay - like a perfect spot
__From: From here on blind, Wir sind Helden, 2005

The professional image of "the architect" has come under criticism in recent years. The planning is too one-dimensional, the field of work is not diverse enough, and the narratives are too antiquated. Many therefore leave the profession they actually love shortly after graduating. Structural and systemic factors combined with discrimination signal to women in particular, but also to other marginalized groups, that there is no place for them in architecture.[1] Their drop-out on the one hand and the promotion of an implicitly patriarchal culture on the other leads to a largely homogeneous planning field that by no means does justice to all realities of life. A Gen Z espousing new values, the complex realities of the climate crisis, and the simple call for equitable career access for all make an update to the culture of work in architecture more urgent than ever.

In the artistic project 2023/2024 WHOSE TIME(S)? Came to Stay, we would like to question the work culture in architectural teaching and practice - with the intention of formulating a critical position that makes staying possible for everyone. How do we succeed in opening up the profession to diverse ways of acting? What specifically bothers us, what is missing? What atmosphere do I myself need in order to work well? How can I create this for myself and others? How can we, for example, anchor love or a new time policy in architecture? What new concepts of masculinity does architecture need? How do we break away from planning focused on Western concepts of thinking? So what culture and spaces do we need to stay?

With different perspectives (e.g. philosophy) and formats (e.g. book, film), we want to address the question in the artistic project WHOSE TIME(S)? Came to Stay to critically approach the work culture and the values represented in it in architecture with a feminist-intersectional approach, in order to individually and collectively create a holistic picture of the urgently needed changes.
