Subject of course

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

We find references in the history of art and architecture, consider strategies and procedures and incorporate them into our own artistic (design) process. We want to understand the artistic procedure and analyze and discuss it in the context of social and political changes.

The ruined castle of Dürnstein with its extraordinary view of the meandering Danube in the Wachau is the starting point of our investigations.
In 1140-1145 the castle was built by the Kuenringers (Hadmar I.) and connected with the town of Dürnstein by a defensive wall. The castle became famous due to the capture of King Richard the Lionheart in December 1192 to March 1193, when he was delivered to the German Emperor Henry VI and paid a massive ransom to the German Roman Empire and Austria.
At the end of the 30 Years War, the castle gate was blown up in 1645 by the Swedes under General Torstenson. From 1662 there were no more inhabitants and the castle gradually fell into disrepair.

The task will be to extend the existing thematic path to the castle in an artistic and creative way. Approaches are to show the life in the castle, to document the daily routine, to process in a video collage. How can one show the way into the castle with its rooms more intensively, possibly by means of animation or model the architectural conditions for the visitors more experiencable.
How were the hygienic conditions, can one make the premises to the different daily routines between work, sleep, cook and dine (eat) more visible by a conscious design. The main purpose of the fortified castle was certainly the defense with all its military facets, can one discover the related clues?
