Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to recognize and name methods of art in order to use them as a basis for their own creative practice as architects. The mediation and appreciation of arts, places of its production, presentation and discussion, as well as the discourse on art itself are understood as a individual spaces to develop. On the basis of independently developed projects and strategies, the own artistic practice as a architects will be understood as a self-concept.

Subject of course

Field Fire Furnace

It is the fundamental elements of fire, earth and water that this year - coupled with the Form and Design module on the theme of "Land Art" - are brought together to form a common object. The function of this object is a fireplace, a kiln, that infrastructure that has always been a productive companion to artistic ways of working. We will look at the different forms of ceramic kilns and the numerous possibilities of firing. So-called field firings and possible test kilns will serve us as experimental setups in the development of a collectively built kiln. The form and function of this kiln will be defined by those objects that will be developed in parallel in the module Form and Design. The construction of a kiln is a challenge that can only be met collectively, which is why the social moment of building and operating one will be of great importance. The kiln or kilns are to be built on the site of the Nicoloso brickworks in Pottenbrunn - in the immediate vicinity of the last ring kiln in Austria - and then heated and operated. Due to the project, the Artistic Project M will take place in blocks in the months of June and July. A corresponding interest in craft work, commitment and flexibility are therefore necessary prerequisites for participation in the course.
