Focus WS 2021:Gender? Inclusion? Feminism? Intersectionality? No topics in the study of architecture? The collective Claiming*Spaces at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning of the Vienna University of Technology has been campaigning for inclusion and against discrimination in the educational and academic context since 2019.A variety of courses have already been held for this purpose. The results achieved always form the basis for further deepening. This semester, the current teaching in the architecture program at the TU Vienna will be reflected from different perspectives. The focus will be on the following questions:WHO teaches - Do the teachers reflect social diversity?WHAT is taught - Does the knowledge taught reflect the actual or necessary diversity of the built environment as well as responsible planning theorists and practitioners from history and the present?HOW is teaching done - How sensible and respectful is the interaction of faculty with students as well as students with each other? The existing situation at the faculty is analyzed. This also draws on existing surveys. The preparation of successful best-practice examples from other universities of architecture supports the understanding of already existing strategies, processes and Improvements. In addition, developed surveys should collect the thematic awareness and wishes of students. From the subsequent presentations and discussions, proposals for gender-inclusive-feminist-intersectional course formats will be developed. In an interim presentation, they will be presented at the Claiming*Spaces #2 conference in mid-December at the Architekturzentrum Wien. Results are to be formulated in a manual to be developed for appropriate architectural teaching.
Teachers span the context of the content of the work topic.Students acquire knowledge through research and discuss and reflect on these in groups to be formed on selected topics.Short presentations serve the thematic reflection of all participants. In the course of the semester, further independent group work takes place.
