Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to take a stand on a socio-politically relevant topic - in the SS 2020 Financialization of housing - using different artistic forms of expression and media. They have developed an idea of (socio)critical art and are sensitized to the economic order of the city, but also to interventions in public space.

Subject of course

Here comes the investor ...

The artistic project A deals with housing as an investment in the SS 2020. It is being held by Anita Aigner together with the Zurich-based artist duo Michael Meier and Christoph Franz.

What is popularly referred to as 'investing in concrete gold' and in scientific literature 'financialization' may be advantageous for the individual, but is disadvantageous for the urban community. In order to better understand the processes of economization of housing and its effects, we must first 'warm up' in terms of content - with the documentary 'Push - For the Basic Right to Housing' (2019) and with the discussion of relevant technical literature.

Using selected works as examples, we will examine various media and forms of expression of socio-critical art. What tactics have been developed, what media have been used to comment critically on questionable social developments (whether modestly reserved or loudly actionist)? While Klaus Staeck and the Guerilla Girls rely on flyers, posters and postcards to express resistance, the urban wall is enough for the street artist Banksy. But which media still work today? How and where can we reach people? What role does context/positioning play?

The aim of this course is to work out an artistic project, individually or in a small group, that deals with the transformation of housing into an investment product. It will become apparent during the course of the work whether any works can be realized beyond the concept stage.

Registration requires relevant and genuine interest.
The LVA will be held blocked. It is expected that the first block will be held on 2 and 3 March (full day from 9:00-20:00) in the modelling hall of the TVFA hall; the second block for 2-3 days in the week from 18-22 May.
