This winter semester, the artistic project M deals with the phenomenon of the museum shop, as a meeting place of architecture, art and design, and self-marketing tendencies of artists* or institutions.

In cooperation with Vienna Secession - Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession

Today, museum visitors are increasingly regarded as consumers by art institutions, which has not only manifested itself in their programmes, art mediation and other accompanying programmes for the purpose of fulfilling visitor quotas, but has also led to a new significance of the museum shop. The shop of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) opens branches all over the world, without including the surrounding museum, its collections and discourses. In times of Instagram and similar social media formats, a museum's shop serves as a source of quickly identity-creating artifacts that can be used to undertake cultural self-representation. Products such as art catalogues, monographs or editions that are linked to the artistic or cultural-scientific aspirations of the art institution dwindle instead of products that convey creativity and individuality, such as cookbooks or children's toys torn out of their context. Larger and larger brands are entering into cooperations with museums and making use of their exclusive customer contacts.

This winter semester, the Artistic Project M wants to critically explore the museum shop landscape of Vienna and its art institutions in order to understand the identities of art institutions on the basis of their marketing spaces. Where architecture, art, design and their marketing meet, we would like to develop new possibilities for the identity foundation for art institutions and their audiences. Analogous to the self-marketing tendencies of artists, new ideas for products, editions, printed matter, merchandising and the like will be developed and realized in cooperation with the Vienna Secession. Project ideas, prototypes and/or printed matter will be produced and presented in an appropriate framework. On the basis of these, possible long-term cooperation with the Vienna Secession is to be developed.

Who is Vienna Secession - Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession?

In keeping with the motto that adorns its facade—“To each era its art. To art its freedom.”—the Secession hosts an international program that explores current forms of artistic expression in solo and themed exhibitions. It is a sounding board for the aesthetic and critical discourses on art, culture, and society that define our era and keenly aware of their political significance.

The Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession is the world’s oldest independent exhibition institution specifically dedicated to contemporary art that is led by artists. The Secession is an important forum for young experimental art, but its mission also encompasses prominent established positions. Essays, catalogues, symposia, and lectures supplement, document, and communicate the program of exhibitions and events.
