Researching projects for www.urban-matters.org
- an international web database for artistic-urbanistic projects and methods of a socially oriented urban planning
The knowledge of innovative artistic-urbanistic strategies and current urbanistic issues (see critical spatial practice) and tasks will be discussed, together with exploring how the role of these innovative strategies can be implemented as new methods for urban planning.
Urban-matters.org is an international web database which Barbara Holub installed in the frame of her research project " Planinng Unplanned" (see the publication: Planning Unplanned. Can Art Have a Function? Towards a New Function of Art in Society", eds. Christine Hohenbüchler/ Barbara Holub, Verlag für moderne Kunst Nürnberg, 2015).
Urban-matters.org offers a growing survey of (public)art projects, organizations and institutions of diverse cultural and geo-political backgrounds worldwide for locating and connecting urgent urban issues and discussing innovative urbanistic-artistic approaches, tools and methods at the intersection of art, urban planning, critical political involvement and theory engaged in urban issues on a longer term perspective for urban planning, addressing the following questions:
How can we develop new visions for urban and regional matters and introduce new social and societal values as intrinsic aspect for urban development? Which role can art and artistic strategies play in the context of urban issues and urban development? How can art maintain its autonomy within processes of urban planning? How can urban practitioners in their transdisciplinary roles achieve a position recognized as equal to other experts engaged in urban planning? Which conditions are needed to install new tools and strategies for urban planning?
The goal of urban-matters.org is not only to provide an overview of the manifold projects and initiatives engaged in developing new methods, but to learn from other contexts. Therefore extracting the tools, strategies and issues of the projects and their various contexts is a major component to turn the database into an eminent ressource for urban practitioners, urban planning departments, (community) organizations and residents.
In the seminar the students will research relevant projects worldwide, as well as texts/ publications related to the topic, and will develop ideas for communicating urban-matters.org to the international community.
The students will thus not only actively contribute to urban-matters.org, but will have the opportunity to connect to international innovative artistic-urbanistic practices and grow their professional network.
In this blocked seminar the first date (introduction) is compulsory, but the other dates for the meetings will be coordinated individually according to the progress of research.
Students from various cultural backgrounds are especially invited to make use of their mother tongues for researching projects in other countries.Do, 25.10.2018, 14-16:00 Einführung zu www.urban-matters.org
