After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply scientific standards on their own text production. They learn to look at a text they have produced themselves (within the framework of the elective seminar Cultural and Architectural Sociology 264.145) from a critical distance, learn to improve it in a revision step and to raise it to a new level of scientific quality.
The in-depth extension and revision of a (raw) text does not simply mean extending the scope of the text. Rather, qualitative criteria are applied. The question of the central argument, the essential findings, the theoretical framework and the embedding in existing research literature are at the forefront of the revision. If necessary, the scientific question will be modified, pointed out and narrowed down and brought to a workable level. The existing text will be questioned and improved for systematic presentation and consistency. It is possible (see further information) to submit the final paper as a theoretical bachelor thesis.
If you want to deal in depth with a seminar paper/theoretical topic, you have the opportunity to write a theoretical bachelor thesis. In this case, this would be specifically noted in your Bachelor's certificate.
§5 (2) Bachelor curriculum:
(2) At the request of students, the governing body responsible for study law may allow the Bachelor's thesis to be written in the "Architecture Research Module".
Three courses are linked to the theoretical bachelor thesis:
1. an optional seminar (e.g. optional seminar on sociology of culture and architecture, optional seminar on art history, optional seminar on comparative architectural history, optional seminar on architectural history, etc.) (obligatory for all anyway)
2. the lecture series Methodology of Architectural Research (259.268), 1.0 St./ 1.0 ETCS (obligatory for all anyway)
3. an in-depth seminar (e.g. in-depth seminar on architectural sociology (264,151), in-depth seminar on art history (251,693) or in-depth seminar (251,693) to the extent of 3.0 St. /4.0 ETCS); in the in-depth seminar, the topic dealt with in the elective seminar is worked out in greater depth and the additional effort is compensated with a further certificate.
Registration: The submission of a theoretical Bachelor thesis requires the approval of the Dean of Studies. Students must therefore send an abstract of their work to the Dean of Studies.
Size: About twice as large as a normal seminar paper (approx. 40 pages).
Students who take an in-depth seminar in addition to the elective seminar and the lecture series can apply for this to be listed in the Bachelor's report as a Bachelor's thesis and for its grade to be used as the grade for the Bachelor's thesis. According to the curriculum, however, the in-depth seminar is mathematically part of the free optional subjects. However, all students have to do the "Integrative Design".
