We will find referenced references in art and architectural history, consider strategies and approaches and incorporate them into our own artistic (design) process. We want to understand the artistic procedure and analyze and discuss it in the context of social and political changes.
Viennese municipal buildings are a formative part of the Viennese cityscape. The building projects of the city of Vienna in the interwar years were, besides the urgent housing shortage, also an expression of an ideological and socio-political change. Once again, we want to take an in-depth look at the spatial struggles of Red Vienna. For this, the focus is on the Schlingerhof, a homage to Georg Weissel and the Kämpfer:innen in Vienna in February 1934, where a sound list performance installation: 2024 - 90 years after the February Struggles is to take place in February, to which we can make a contribution.
In the meantime, the municipal buildings have become monuments to Social Democratic values and Viennese urban history. At the same time, they are still vibrant components of urban life and to a large extent meet contemporary housing standards.
Prominent persons of the political events of the 20th century are name donors of individual municipal buildings, as well as freedom fighters whose names might otherwise have disappeared from the collective memory.
Our questions are:
What is a living memorial?
How do you activate monuments?
How do you create an artistic reference in connection with the responsibility of (collective) remembrance?
Project work: pair and group work, teaching inputs, presentations and teaching conversations, Excursions to the places of the places, happenings.
