2014S, VU, 2.0h, 2.5EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.5
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Aim of course

The Lecture gives an introduction into methodology and technology of present computerized manufacturing techniques (CAD/CAD) as well as into their utilization in model making, prototyping and production in the field of architectural and industrial design.

Subject of course

This terms topic will shift the focus from basic digital fabrication to more advanced and more integrated uses of digital fabrication. We will design and build small autonomous mobile robots, one for each student. These small swarm of robots will than be shared and programmed so that the robots solve complex task by collaborating.

The robot will be based on a small ARM powered embedded Linux board, like the Beaglebone Black or the Raspbery Pi, feature two individually controlled motors to drive the main wheels and several different sensors, including a camera.

Of course the lecture will also also include a lot general information on material processing options like (master forming, forming, cutting, etc.), form finding and definition methods in CAD systems, revere engineering technologies, numerical and computer numerical controlled machines (NC/CNC bending, cutting, milling, welding), various rapid prototyping, rapid tooling and rapid manufacturing technologies (laser sintering, 3d printing, etc.), quality and economical as well as ecological aspects of these techniques, repercussions of manufacturing processes on the design.
