Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • recognize the inherent possibilities and limitations of a chosen material in relation to the desired design;
  • generate procedural and sensorimotor knowledge an thus expand their declarative planning knowledge;
  • become aware of the close connection between material and manufacturing methods (technologies) as basic conditions of the form of three-dimensional objects;
  • recognize, in the concrete production of objects, their affordances and thus their qualities and peculiarities and to react to them
  • develop their future form wishes in a fundamental dialogue with selected materials and used technology;

Subject of course

The success of a desired design as well as the qualitative implementation of creative ideas and concepts in an (artistic) object or product depends, among other things, on knowledge and experience in dealing with materials and the technologies available for manufacturing processes. The content of the course is the mediation of these factors, which in a complex way determine each other, as well as the testing of their manifold interdependency in the course of a concrete design.

Teaching methods

The „Gipsraum“ of our research area is provided as a learning environment. A more in-depth individual research on the topic forms the beginning. First ideas in the form of sketches are accompanied by material and manufacturing experiments. The exploration of the material properties to their limits is an important component for the discovery of artistically relevant qualities.

Individual work or group work (max. in pairs)

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

The course is linked as an accompanying course to the LVA 264.156, Artistic Project X (led by Ass.Prof. Mag.art. Fridolin Welte) and can only be taken in this context.

No registration via TISS is necessary for this LVA, because the participants are taken over by the artistic project X.

The obligatory introduction will take place on Monday, 09 March 2020, 10:00h in the "Gipsraum" (Erzherzog Johann Platz 1) together with the introduction to the artistic project X (kleines Entwerfen).
