Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply the acquired skills praktically:

The learning goal is to deepen competence in the design of three-dimensional objects through practical exercises and by acquiring theoretical background knowledge from the fields of design theory, material-related shaping, design theory and methodology. The planning, production and presentation of art is methodically prepared using the example of a specific topic-related task. These are developed at 1:1 scale by means of digital and physical design methods. Forms of presentation are developed and tested.

This summer semester we would like to design the rooms of the newly appointed rectorate together with you. These are very centrally located in the main building on Karlsplatz with a view of Resselpark on the 1st floor. Since the building was occupied in 1818, the fortunes of TU Wien and its predecessors have been steered from here by a long line of rectors. Their portraits are still present here. The furnishings of the rooms have changed time and again with the respective rectors in charge; with the last two rectors, for example, the atmosphere changed from heavy and baroque to an interchangeable, functional design. With the appointment of the new rectorate, concepts are now to be developed for these rooms that interpret the modern ideas of management, communication and use of the rectorate but also take into account the historical and structural context. The rooms and their atmosphere are to be considered as a whole, and of course the rooms are also subject to a dedicated use that is to be complied with.

We will start with various workshops in which we will approach the topic associatively, build physical models of the spaces and then experiment with photos and AI to explore different atmospheres. This phase will be followed by a three-day excursion to Munich (March 20-22) where we will visit designers, production facilities and museums to explore the topic in more depth. After Easter we will have a feedback workshop with the rectorate where we can get feedback on our initial ideas and ask questions. We will then go through the classic process of concept, design and implementation. At the end of the semester, plans, models and 1:1 sections with design and material statements are presented to the rectorate.

In addition to supervision, the research department also supports you with the use of our studio, workshops and library. We expect a high level of motivation and commitment from you, everything else can be learned from us. We would therefore like the development and implementation to take place on our premises wherever possible so that we can provide feedback and support at any time if required. The workshop is involved in the process right from the start; there is the possibility and is also expected that an intensive and quality-oriented examination of the material and its processing takes place alongside the design settings. A qualified and motivated team is on hand to assist you in this process:

Johanna Pichlbauer, designer for design theory
Christian Kern, architect for the design process and the excursion
Marco Palma, architect and researcher for the fundamentals of design
Gregor Titze, artist and photographer for materials and technology
Elisabeth Kofler, architect and model maker for model making and mock-ups
Cosma Grosser, architect and artist for the drawing and graphic methods

Teaching methods

The courses in the module are taught in an interdisciplinary manner and focus on different aspects of a common problem:

Independent research; workshops; work on site in the "Modelliersaal" as well as outdoor space/on the grounds of the castle Drosendorf; weekly meetings and feedback sessions; individual and independent development and presentation of an object in the field of product design or sculptural artistic design; presentation of the results in the context of exhibitions; work in small groups (max. 2 persons)
