Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to overview the historical development of modern product design as well as the most important positions of design theory and to apply the most important basic concepts. On a practical level, they learn the essential methods and design tools for the development of functional and sculptural objects. They will be able to work out problems within design tasks and set up parameters for their solution. They can structure their design approaches into systematic process steps and develop and produce them step by step on a 1:1 scale using working models, mock-ups and prototypes.

Subject of course

"LAND ART"

This year's module deals with Land Art, as well as its possibilities and conditions for the production of art works.

Site and Non-Site are terms used by the Land Art artist Robert Smithson to fundamentally question and re-think the space of the artwork and the space of the exhibition. The site for an artwork is not chosen in a gallery space but outside, in the open landscape. A kind of 'indoor land art' is shown in the gallery space: transferred earth material, photographic and drawing presentations and the like that form a so-called Non-Site. Site and Non-Site are mutually dependent: material and metaphorical entanglements emerge between Site and Non-Site that exceed the limitations of an exhibition space.

Parallels to the current situation of the pandemic can be observed here with regard to the evaluation of spaces: Indoor spaces do not meet the demands currently placed on them - certain activities shift to outdoor spaces - media-supported forms of communication determine the visibility of works and thus influence their production and reception. This year's module is regarded as a part within this dynamic.

The Earth is the Canvas. The industrial landscape of the Nicoloso brick factory with its generous open spaces in Lower Austria will become the canvas. On the grounds of Nicoloso we will produce objects, installations and land art, as well as develop strategies for photo and video production. This year's module shifts the attention to the outdoors: analogous to the movement from indoor to outdoor space initiated by Land Art, as well as the larger scaling of the material working basis, contents of the module will be partly developed and presented in workshops on site. Equally, these will be extended into the media space through strategically deployed forms of representation and provide direct insight into the production and mediation of Land Art.

The core subjects of the module are taught in an interdisciplinary way and focus on different aspects of a common question. While theoretical and computer-based basics are worked on in digital distance mode, workshops (as laboratory exercises) are held in physical presence in the outdoor space while adhering to strict hygiene regulations. The artistic project M is coupled with the module - the subsidiary subjects Digital Production and Analytical Drawing are optional but recommended.

The aim of the course is to deepen the competence in the design of three-dimensional objects through practical exercises and by acquiring theoretical background knowledge in the fields of design theory, material-related shaping, Gestalttheory and design methodology. Using the example of a concrete, topic-related task, the planning and production of a design object is methodically prepared and developed into a 1:1 prototype by integrating digital and physical design methods.

Additional information

COVID-19: If, due to requirements of the federal government or the Vienna University of Technology, it is not possible to hold the course and the examination or the partial performances in presence, the online format will be used. By changing to the online format, the dates announced for the face-to-face course and examination (partial examinations) may change. In the case of a change to the online format, the course will be held via Zoom meetings and the examination mode will be in the corresponding form of a final oral presentation
