Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to gain an overview of the development of important socially engaged artists, artistic practices and projects. They also gained insight into important aspects of critical art discourse in relation to a socially engaged urbanistic practice.

The lecture series is a crucial basis for elaborating the projects for the module.

Subject of course

_urbanist-artistic practices
_institutional critique
_critical spatial practice
_possibilities of self-initiated projects and self commissioning
_negotiation and appropriation of urban public space

Especially since the 1990s artists have engaged in socio-political and urban issues thus questioning concentional roles and fields of the artist. These changing roles do not only address the positioning of the artist in the conflictuous debate between art market and critically engaged art practices in the urban public realm, but also concern the role of the "consumer" (Michel de Certeau) as active participant. Increasingly new visions are not only proclaimed rhetorically or in the art context, but artists aim at having an impact on society. These projects are often subjected to the critique of dismissing their "own" terrain, and to interfere in the terrain of other experts thus "betraying" the autonomy of art.

The lecture series will give an insight in the discourse on the above mentioned issues by presenting art projects and texts, with a focus on performative, participatory and transdisciplinary practices and how these practices contribute to producing new roles (urban practitioner).
