After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply either basic video and photographic knowledge, depending on the semester focus. The focus is on the steps of documentation, preparation, presentation and archiving.

Teaching examples of street photography, architectural photography, conceptual photography, object photography, workers and industrial photography and analysis of structural, documentary, serial, situationist, postmodern and other display and presentation methods in the context of architecture.

Lectures and practical exercises are intertwined in such a way that a gradual development of the tasks is forced. Several interdisciplinary feedback rounds will take place in the semester, making it possible to coordinate the results in the various areas of design and topic development. At the end of the semester, the skills you have learned flow into a comprehensive project in which most of the current teaching techniques are used.

DIe genaue Aufgabenstellung wird im Laufe des Semesters präzisiert. So kurz und einfach sie klingt, so vielfältig und komplex ist schon allein der Begriff des Dokumentarischen – wie dehnbar ist dieser Begriff in der Fotografie? Von Reportage über Inszenierung bis hin zu systemischen/konzeptuellen Vorgehensweisen ist das Feld schwer abzustecken.

Begleitend zu praktischen Übungen und Aufgabenstellungen wird im Laufe des Semesters ein Überblick über die Dokumentarfotografie und deren unterschiedliche Herangehensweisen und Tendenzen anhand von ausgewählten historischen und aktuellen Beispielen gegeben und der Begriff des Dokumentarischen, seine Parameter, Probleme und Bedeutungsverschiebung diskutiert.
