After positive completion of the course, students are able to identify varied relationships between artworks and space, starting from a deep investigation into 20th century art history. They can then critically examine designs, spaces, objects and production processes.

Subject of course

Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty, 'the salt Salt Lake project', emerges from a series of earlier works that Smithson referred to as 'Aerial Art': works located on the ground to be viewed from the air, which he wrote about in the Summer 1967 issue of Artforum magazine. The time-based, technology-supported and ground-detached position from which the work is to be received is not only co-conceived in the work, but is fundamental to its concept. Smithson not only wrote canonical texts on this topic, which have lost none of their impact over the years. The perspective he adopts is a special one: he does not write about his work, he writes next to his work - and virtually places the text alongside it. Relationships between text and work are freely established. Based on a close look at the Spiral Jetty, as well as the text and film produced by Smithson in its context, we will look at Smithson's perspectivity of writing in order to subsequently write our own texts on the artefacts produced in the Land Art module using creative writing tools.

The lecture provides a theoretical framework for the semester topic of the module Form and Design. It offers insights into the relationships between design, art and materiality as a background for the development of spatial systems and objects. It illuminates the embedding of art works in the cultural and historical context. Theoretical foundations are provided on the basis of various aspects of 20th century art history, allowing students to take a critical look at art objects.

The course starts, together with the introduction to the module Form and Design, on Tuesday, 3rd March 2021, 10h in the "Modelliersaal" (main building Karlsplatz,Stiege 1, 4.OG).
