Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • to recognise the inherent possibilities and limitations of the chosen materials in relation to the desired design
  • to generate procedural and sensomotoric knowledge and thus expand their declarative planning knowledge
  • to become aware of the close connections between materials and manufacturing methods as basic shaping conditions of three-dimensional objects
  • to develop their future form desires in a fundamental dialogue with the chosen material and technology

Subject of course

The success of a desired design as well as the qualitative implementation of design ideas and concepts in an (art) object or product depends, among other things, on knowledge and experience in dealing with materials and the technologies available for manufacturing processes. Material and technology as a condition of form is a main subject of this year's module "Form and Design". Thus, the works and discussions refer to the quallities of material, tool and use. The awareness of these factors, which are mutually dependent in a complex way, as well as the testing of their manifold interweaving in the course of a concrete design, is the content of the course.

Teaching methods

In the course of the course, concepts and designs of modular objects for the exhibition spaces of the Weltmuseum Wien will be developed. In two teams, ideas and design proposals related to the project theme will be developed and practically implemented. These will be tested and discussed in the form of artistic interventions on site at the museum. The modeling room of the research area, which is available on Mondays and Wednesdays, will serve as the studio and production site. A corresponding interest in art and culture as well as in craft work are necessary prerequisites for participation in the course. Active participation and a high level of engagement are expected.
