After successful completion of the course, students are able to...
- to recognise the inherent possibilities and limitations of the chosen materials in relation to the desired design;
- to generate procedural and sensomotoric knowledge and thus expand their declarative planning knowledge;
- to become aware of the close connections between materials and manufacturing methods (technologies) as basic shaping conditions of three-dimensional objects;
- to develop their future form desires in a fundamental dialogue with the chosen material and technology;
- understand the connection between analog and digital means of material simulation

The success of a desired design as well as the qualitative implementation of design ideas and concepts in an (artistic) object or product depends, among other things, on knowledge and experience in handling materials and the technologies available for production processes. This course aims to convey these factors, which are interdependent in a complex way, and to test their multifaceted interwoven existence in the course of a concrete design. More specifically the course will focus on digital material simulations parallely to analog explorations of material tectonics.
The Modelliersaal of our research department is available as a learning environment. A hands-on workshop on the topic will take place in the beginning of the course. Initial ideas in the form of digital simulations are accompanied by material experiments. Exploring the material properties to their limits is an important part of finding out artistically and structurally relevant qualities.
The introduction of the course will take place on Monday 7th of March at 11:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00 in Modelliersaal. The course will take place regularly on Mondays morning.
We only accept students that take part in the Module Form*Design.
We strongly recommend the participants to attend the complementary courses ‘Digital Production 264.140’ and 264.049 ‘Analytical and Functional Drawing’.
McNeel Rhinoceros v7 is the software platform of choice.
Classes will be held in English.
Classes will be held in presence. In case of a changed corona situation, changes in the format may occur (e.g. change to hybrid learning).
