Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • Develop an understanding of open space systems and greenways
  • Reflect on open spaces in terms of context- and culture-specific differences (Seoul / Vienna)
  • Reflect on the connections between structural, social and vegetative processes
  • Learn to read and analyze places

In the mega-city of Seoul, we will explore the city on foot and by bike, get to know urban river systems and organize a design workshop with Seoul National University to gain insights into Korean planning culture, working and living practices.

Subject of course

Seoul, the capital of Korea, has increasingly pursued the “green” enhancement of existing canal and river systems since the early 2000s. Well-known examples of this include the restoration of the Cheonggyecheon River. In Vienna, efforts are also visible to move river systems and flood control structures away from a purely technocratic interpretation towards recognizing and enhancing them as important urban open spaces with social, ecological and climatic functions. However, there is still potential for improvement in terms of the implementation and quality of these spaces, for example in parts of the Wien River. A look at Seoul could provide important design and planning impulses here.

Coupled with the design course "Making Greenways - typological transposition between Vienna and Seoul" (UE 260.913 Design Studio), students will explore, digitally record and examine the two cities on site.

This will serve as a basis for approaching the two metropolises of Seoul and Vienna analytically and in terms of design in order to gain new insights. The excursion will focus on reading the location, reflecting on culturally specific approaches, different understandings of space and the precise analysis of the location using digital techniques.

Teaching methods

Excursion program in Seoul

  • Design and Photogrammetry Workshop with Seoul National University
  • City Walks
  • Visit Korean parks and palaces
  • Expert inputs
  • Bicycle tour along the Han Gang River
  • Mapping, reflection and analysis of urban river systems and culture-specific differences between Vienna and Seoul
  • Visit of Korean architecture offices and landscape architecture offices

Design Workshop with Seoul National University:
The software taught in this course are open source programs and are to be installed by the students on their work computers: Meshroom (WIN only, requires Parallels on MAC), CloudCompare (WIN/MAC), and QGIS (WIN/MAC). The choice of additional CAD/photo editing/layout software remains up to you. For acceptable results with Meshroom, one good camera (20 megapixel, no cell phone) per group of three is recommended. The design studio and travel require a laptop with sufficient free disk space (200 GB) or a fast external USB drive.

Additional information

ATTENTION:

The course is coupled with the excursion the design studio "Making Greenways - typological transposition between Vienna and Seoul" (260.913). Participation in the design studio is mandatory!

The excursion to Korea takes place from 1.11.2024 - 10.11.2024 (incl. travel time).
Start of the excursion in Seoul: Saturday, 2.11.2024 at 17.00 (Korea Standard Time)
End of the excursion in Seoul: Saturday, 9.11.2024 at 12.00 noon (Korea Standard Time)

The flight and accommodation must be organized and financed by the students themselves, so that this matches the individual budget.
A visa may have to be organized by the students themselves (Austrian and German students do not need a visa).

Accommodation should - if possible - be booked near the historic city center (possible districts: Jung-gu, Jongno-gu, Yongsan-gu, Dongdaemun-gu).

Cost calculation: You can calculate the costs with a budget of approx. 1800-2500 €: approx. 1000-1500 € for flight, approx. 450-600 € for accommodation, 100 € for entrance fees, 50 € for public transportation in Seoul, approx. 200-250 € for food), but maybe you can manage it cheaper.

Please register only in connection with LVA 260.913 Design “Making Greenways - typological transposition between Vienna and Seoul”.
