After successful completion of the course, students are able to..

- conceive and visualise the topic as architectural, social and ecological question

- analyse lakesides and their spatial qualities

- understand degrees of public and private spheres, legal questions regarding accessibility and conflicting use

- cooperate with students studying spatial planning

- collaborate in the conception of a public conference.

The project is interlinked with the LVA 260.862 Exkursion „Seezugänge“.

Access to lakes

Austria has many lakes. But large parts of lakesides are not available for the public. Protests against privatisation and commercialisation resp. for the protection of nature reserves are rather local initiatives. Simultaneously there are initiatives and efforts to reinforce the legal status. The following questions will be addressed during the course: What is the importance of lakes as areas for recreation as well as nature reserves? How can we visualise the spatial and ecological transformations of lakesides? What does access to lakes mean – swimming, draining, view etc.? Which legal, strategic and architectural possibilities are there to transform privatized lakesides and to enhance the accessibility simultaneously keeping ecological aspects in mind?

The course is linked to a public conference taking place in September 2024. The participation in a summer school from September 11 to September 20 is obligatory (fees for accommodation: around 220 EUR per person, field trips are to be organised individually). Students who enjoy swimming, rowing, paddling, biking etc. are warmly welcome. Max. four places are reserved for students of Spatial Planning. The course will be accompanied by lectures from various disciplines.
