After successful completion of the course, students are able to independently and systematically work on complex design tasks from the field of urban planning and settlement development through to object typology using an original, contemporary design approach based on a precise design language. They have the competence to recognise fields of action in context and to develop appropriate solutions. Students will be able to carry out independent research and establish thematic foundations. They are able to create design concepts and present them in a comprehensive manner in the form of strategic, design and detailed plans.
The peripheral settlement areas of the Vienna metropolitan region are subject to increasing settlement pressure in the context of strong population growth, especially if they are well connected by public transport. This is the case in Dörfl, a district of Kirchberg am Wagram, where the nearby railway station is within walking distance and offers trains to Vienna every hour, with a journey time of less than an hour, making it a good alternative to the usual motorised private transport.
The task deals holistically with the settlement structure and its development potential. The aim is to develop scenarios of possible future typologies and to show how a responsible approach to land utilisation could look in the context of rural living away from the classic single-family home, away from the purely individual needs of individuals towards the synergies and conditions of the community with its social requirements of the 21st century. Topics of typology and volumes, interweaving with the landscape, utilisation and infrastructure, materiality, privacy and publicity and others will concern us intensely in this context.
Particular emphasis will be placed on demonstrating and visualising the processual connections between spatial planning, municipal policy and economic, ecological and social aspects, thus making them legible at both a scientific and political level. Based on a collectively developed matrix, as a cartographic atlas of situations and patterns, spatial scenarios and designs are to be developed on several scale levels.
Open access to self-defined questions that are developed in the team on the basis of findings from the one-week on-site workshop and various input presentations. Analyses are prepared, concepts developed and discussed prior to the excursion and subsequently developed into projects. (Group work) Design with two intensive workshops! Please note dates, attendance compulsory!
