Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: EX Excursion
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • to analyse urban green space structures and translate them into planning and design processes
  • understand and develop spatially significant processes that manifest themselves spatially
  • understand and design temporal-spatial dimensions of the study area
  • to focus on process orientation in spatial planning and architecture
  • to carry out a topic-specific spatial contextualization
  • to analyze investigation spaces in different scales with the help of a specific investigation matrix
  • to develop an attitude towards a social-ecological-climatic orientation of transformation processes in planning and design
  • to reflect on their own work process
  • to classify the topic-specific and own results in the planning discourse
  • to develop planning and design principles on city and neighborhood level

IMPORTANT: The excursion can ONLY be attended and completed in combination with the exercise (LVA UE 260.820). The excursion is an integral part of the exercise or project, which is therefore also scheduled.

Subject of course

The exercise/project focuses on the following topics:

  • Social-ecological-climatic orientation of transformation processes in planning and design
  • Overall urban green space structures as a starting point for spatial interventions with relevance for urban development and open space planning
  • Climate change adaptation in the context of urban redevelopment and adaptation of urban morphology

The specific area of investigation includes:

  • in the first step the green space structures on a city scale (Green Space Network Hamburg)
  • In the next step, the Bille corridor in the eastern part of Hamburg will be investigated in detail.

Teaching methods

IMPORTANT: The on-site exploration will take place as part of a nine-day field trip to Hamburg, Germany.

  • 16th to 24th October 2023 in Hamburg
  • Arrival and departure each day before and after, to be organized and financed by yourself
  • Accommodation to be organized and financed by yourself
  • Until 4th of October 2023 a deposit in cash for entrance fees etc. in Hamburg has to be paid (100€) (to be handed in at the secretary's office at the research department Landscape Architecture and Planning, main building, staircase 7, 3rd floor)

The course is based on the following mix of methods:

  • Group work with a focus on discussion and knowledge exchange, both in the small groups (peer-to-peer exchange) and in the plenary.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration (spatial planning + architecture)
  • Independent literature research
  • Development of a "framework" (spatial framework) for analysis, concept and design
  • Various spatial analyses and analysis methods (mapping, layering, superimposition of spatial structures)
  • On-site explorations and site-specific analysis during the field trip (LVA EX 260.824)
  • Inputs from topic-specific experts to perceive and enter discourse and to pick up local knowledge
  • Create a concept from the space and define goals for spatial development
  • Form scenarios
  • Parallelize-Contextualize-Parameterize
  • Process-oriented design

Additional information

This course is aimed at spatial planners AND architects. The project work is done in interdisciplinary (mixed) groups. The number of participants is limited to 20 students of architecture and 10 students of spatial planning.

For architecture students the UE Design (LVA UE 260.820) together with this excursion (LVA EX 260.824) counts as Design with 10+2 = 12 ECTS.

For students of spatial planning the UE Design (LVA UE 260.820) together with this excursion counts as Master Project Spatial Planning ("Project 3") with 12 ECTS.

IMPORTANT: All students who have subscribed to Designing, please also subscribe to the Excursion (LVA EX 260.824). A registration for the excursion is done via the registration for the UE Design (LVA UE 260.820). The exercise or project can ONLY be attended and completed in combination with the excursion. The excursion is an integral part of the exercise or project, which is therefore also scheduled.
