EISENSTADT - Urban scenarios for "the world's smallest big city"
As a result of the explosion of real estate prices in capital cities and favored by the expansion of transport infrastructures, many smaller cities in the catchment area of large urban agglomerations have moved from peripheral quiet to center stage. In recent years, Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland, has been one of the fastest-growing and highest-income cities in Austria. This growth path will be further accelerated in the near future by a fast rail connection with Vienna and the expansion of the railroad station.
Today, Eisenstadt is still strongly rooted in small-town to rural structures. The self-image of being the "smallest big city in the world" has not yet taken on any contours in the urban structure and cityscape. The pressure of investors towards the development of building land and the realization of large-scale projects poses great challenges for politics, administration and the people of Eisenstadt, creates tension and raises the question of what type(s) of urbanity are suitable and future-oriented for Eisenstadt in the long term. The current high living and environmental qualities are to be preserved, while at the same time innovative development approaches are to be taken up.
Urban scenarios and development modules for urban expansion around the train station in Eisenstadt will be developed in intensive exchange with representatives of the city and relevant local stakeholders (architects, property developers...).
The course will take place in summer in Vienna and Eisenstadt. Registration via e-mail with portfolio until 19.03. to robert.korab@tuwien.ac.at.
