After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on complex design tasks of urban transformation independently, systematically and with an original, contemporary design approach in a precise design language.
They have the competence to recognise fields of action in an urban context, to develop appropriate urban planning solutions and to comprehensively present them in the form of strategy, draft and detailed plans.
Topic The urban landscape of Ukraine has been radically transformed by Russia's war of aggression, which has been ongoing since February 24, 2022. While war rages in the frontline regions in the east and south of the country, cities in the hinterland are challenged to cushion the immediate impact of this war. The city of Lviv in western Ukraine (730,000 inhabitants before the start of the war) is one of these cities and plays a very important role as a so-called "back-up city". Since the beginning of the war, Lviv has become a destination for countless displaced people and currently has around 900,000 inhabitants (estimate). The challenges are enormous: the city must develop resilient structures in the short, medium and long term to meet the most urgent needs of its population. The design deals with the concrete urban challenges of Lviv as a Social Resilient City. Project Lviv's chief architect Anton Kolomeitsev had proposed the following 2 priority sites for the processing of this design, which result from an immediate need due to the war situation and will therefore enter a concrete planning phase in the short to medium term. In WS 2022-23, typological urban design projects were developed at TU Vienna and Lviv Polytechnic University for both sites. Now the thematic and design deepening to a "proof of concept" will take place. In the summer semester 2023, the participants of the design Lviv Social Resilient City 2.0 will work in a research-based urban design process on the topics of "Physical and Mental Rehabilitation" and "Productive City" for one of the two locations. The goal is to develop practical focus projects at the scale of the neighborhood under the updated framework.
Cooperation
The Design Studio Lviv Social Resilient City 2.0 is organized within the academic cooperation between TU Wien and Lviv Polytechnic National University and Lviv City Planning Department. Students and teachers of the above mentioned universities will cooperate in this project by means of online tools.
Numerous projects (teaching and research) from the now long-standing cooperation between the two universities can be accessed on the cooperation website: www.vienna-lviv.info
Participants should have positively completed theso cdalled "Städtebau-Studio".
