  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: EX Excursion
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to develop a spatial analysis and initial vision for their design work based on their impressions on site. Based on this, the excursion enables students to realise their concepts and designs on a 1:1 basis: As part of a building workshop lasting several days.

Subject of course

The excursion takes place in conjunction with Project Design on City and Landscape (260.715). It is NOT necessary to register separately in TISS for the excursion itself.
As part of LVA 260.735, independent research on best-practice examples of tactical urbanism and climate change adaptation and joint inspections of projects in Vienna and the surrounding area will be carried out.

TikTak Galilei
Tactical urbanism and placemaking for sustainable climate change adaptation in Alsergrund

In times of climate change and health crises, short-term, temporary transformations of public spaces through tactical urbanism are becoming increasingly important. They make the added value of major changes directly tangible and increase awareness and acceptance among the population, administration and politics. Their particular potential lies in promoting learning processes and initiating and accelerating rapid, sustainable transformation.

In the summer semester of 2024, this is to be implemented as part of a co-creative design and planning process using the example of Galileigasse in Vienna's 9th district. The focus will be on interdisciplinary collaboration between Master's students of architecture and spatial planning with local stakeholders, the development of a concept and the actual 1:1 implementation as part of a building workshop. We can expect an intensive semester that has the potential to really make a difference!

The project is a core subject of the elective module City and Landscape (260.715) and this excursion is an essential part of the supplementary subject Excursion (260.735). Students also have the opportunity to attend the VU Practical Planning Discourse (260.855 VU), which is offered at a suitable time and content. The seminar City and Landscape in Climate Change (260.716 SE) provides further in-depth knowledge. This provides the ideal opportunity to attend the entire elective module totalling 18 ECTS in one semester.
