Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • Understand peripheral water systems with regard to co-habitation and integrate them into the design
  • Carry out both morphological and landscape analysis (including the application of actionistic research methods)
  • Explore and deepen relevant ecological, climatic, and landscape architectural design and planning issues
  • Develop new methods of representation to illustrate natural processes and social dynamics in planning projects

Subject of course

SLUSH (Spatial Lab for Urban Nature, Society and Hydrology) focuses on peripheral water spaces - places where the freely flowing creeks of the Vienna Woods encounter the Vienna canal network. On the one hand, the aim is an urban morphological and natural mapping of these hydrological threshold spaces, which are located at the entrance to the city. On the other hand, the project seeks to discover the spatial and design potential of these transitional spaces. The reflection of the threshold - as a place of arrival, of orientation, of dwelling - will be transferred to the scale of the city and reflected. The students will develop an ecological, spatial and creative vision of how these spaces can be designed by taking into account hydrological, social, ecological and climatic dynamics.

Teaching methods

  • Action research
  • Spatial analysis and mapping
  • Concept and design work in small groups
