Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the main issues, current challenges as well as instruments and methods of landscape and environmental planning.

They have a basic knowledge of the fundamental processes, institutions and legal bases of landscape planning in connection with spatial planning issues.

The focus is also on understanding and recognizing connections as well as interactions in spatial and content dimensions.

LANDSCAPE PLANNING ... in practice

USP of the lecture: By inviting external lecturers, students are able to immerse themselves in practical planning discourse and gain diverse insights into possible professional practice.

Subject of course

In the lecture the students acquire knowledge about the theoretical basics of the space "landscape", further the relevant instruments, methods and processes of the planning practice are explained.

The implementation practice of landscape and environmental planning represents the essential content. The different levels of impact of landscape-related spatial planning are put into focus.

The contents are oriented in such a way that the practical needs for the work as spatial planners become comprehensible for the students.

The topics of the lecture in the winter semester 2023/2024 are thus oriented towards current discourses and issues:

  • Introduction: landscape and landscape planning...what am I supposed to do with that?
  • Bruegel, Central Park and Jane Jacobs... what's this mishmash?! ... All is landscape!
  • Landscape ... subjective but also significant! But how can we use meanings and preferences in research and planning?
  • Ideology & implementation ... where are things going and what and where are the hacks in local landscape planning, and why at all? What's up, Wels?
  • Spatial planning is local competence! What should regional landscape planning do then?!
  • Landscapes for Future - Transformative landscape and regional development
  • Save the environment! We have plenty of instruments for that anyway... But what exactly are we negotiating with our available instruments in nature and environmental protection?
  • Cult-UR-landschaft: Fields of tension of different utilization interests. Biodiversity, climate protection, food security - contradiction or possible solution?
  • Bioeconomy and spatial planning - what's that?
  • "The Alps in Austria: natural spectacle of beauty" ... that's how idyllically Austria's advertising describes the Alps ... but what do our spatial planning and especially structural activities in the Alpine region really look like?
  • GetTogether landscape planning ... a joint recap at the end

Teaching methods

Lecture mode in a lecture series format: A variety of landscape planners, spatial planners and ecologists from research and practice are invited to report directly from their daily work.

In addition, two units with a more interactive setting are offered

The lecture will primarily be held in attendance, there will be an online format on the selected dates
