Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand and apply the essential instruments and methods of landscape and environmental planning.

They have a corresponding basic knowledge of the legal foundations, current challenges and research topics. Thus, students receive basic knowledge in landscape planning in connection with spatial planning issues.

Subject of course

In the lecture, students learn about the theoretical foundations of the space "landscape" and further about the instruments, methods and implementation practice of landscape and environmental planning. The contents are oriented in such a way that the practical needs for the work as spatial planners become understandable for the students.

Topics include:

  • As an introduction: understanding of space “landscape”, a retrospective view of the landscape
  • Landscape planning at the municipal level and urban open space development
  • Landscape planning on a regional level
  • Landscape conservation planning
  • Water framework directive
  • Agriculture and forestry
  • Alpine Convention
  • Landscape planning in the alpine region
  • Cultural landscape development
  • Environmental protection law approaches in landscape planning: strategic environmental assessment, environmental assessment, nature impact assessment and nature conservation network Natura 2000

Accompanying the lecture contents, two meetings "Landscape Planning in Your Studies - Get Together" will offer students the opportunity to speak and discuss current landscape-relevant topics and issues in their studies. This serves as a more direct exchange between students, as well as a more immediate and critical exchange on current issues related to landscape and the environment. These topics can be current student projects of the participants (e.g. project 1, brainstorming for project 2 or bachelor thesis, etc.), planning projects discussed in the media (e.g. Lobau tunnel, expressway projects, zoning for PV plants, etc.) or social-ecological and thus socially relevant problems (e.g. energy supply of the future, social-ecological orientation of food production, efficient land use, landscape-compatible Alpine tourism, urban landscape in climate change, etc.).

Teaching methods

Lecture mode among others by landscape planners from the practice, the students have the possibility and task of active participation (possibility of content-related questions and discussions).

Additionally two units with a more interactive setting are offered

The lecture is held in presence - In case of a changed COVID situation, the format may be changed (e.g. change to Distance-Learning).
