More than 50 years after the construction of Roland Rainer's pioneering residential complex in Puchenau, this course is devoting itself to the development of new spatial models for the greater Linz area. While Rainer saw his compact, low-rise building with rail links to the state capital Linz as an ideal settlement model in the 1960s, in the coming semester we will be asking ourselves what future settlement development in the greater Linz area, tailored to the expansion of the rail infrastructure, might look like.
“The population in the Linz region is expected to grow from 340,000 to 373,000 between 2016 and 2030 (source: ÖROK regional forecast 2014).The type of development and the design of new settlements is thereby crucial to the population's decision, which mode of transport will be chosen for daily commuting. It is therefore essential that the development of the settlement and economic area in the Linz region be increasingly geared towards the axes and nodes of public transport” (source: Mobility model of the Linz region, 2018). Building on the recently published spatial planning strategy of the state of Upper Austria ("upper REGION2030") and the current mobility concept for the Linz region ("kumm steig um"), this course aims to create new images of sustainable urbanity in the surroundings of stops of the existing light rail from Linz to Alkoven and along the planned route from Linz to Gallneukirchen.
The design studio will be held in cooperation with the Centre of Regional Planning and Regional Development and Centre of Transportation System Planning. As part of the joint P3 / desgin studio, mixed teams consisting of students from the fields of architecture and spatial planning will deal with the following topics:
- Spatial development along the existing light rail (LILO) from Linz to Alkoven and along the newly planned light rail from Linz to Gallneukirchen
- Urban planning framework for selected development zones at specific stops along the two rail axes mentioned above
- Design of new urban models and building typologies, which serve as prototypes and models of how a sustainable urbanity in the greater Linz area could look like
An important focus of the coupled course is the cooperation and exchange of various actors on site, with the planning departments of the state and the municipalities. The planning teams are interdisciplinary, which is why the course is offered in the master's curriculum of Spatial Planning (P3) as well as in Architecture (design studio).
