After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand current topics such as the social city, the mixed city, the productive city, the resilient city, the city of short distances, the open society, the growing city, land consumption, the overheated city and ecological cycles in the city, in their entirety as a complex set of problems. After positive completion of the course, students will be able to use a special methodology, a continuation of the "Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander" (www.einemustersprache.de), to clearly present the interrelationships of such complex problems and to transform these presentations into sustainable designs in a structured way.
- The common vision - structured analytical approach as a basis for design.
(Creation of a common "project language")
- Analysis of the location based on the "New theory of urban design" (Christopher Alexander)
[target area - centering process]
- Design process in 2 stages
1. using the patterns and the project language, a participatory design process is moderated and started in a workshop
2. two groups work on a part of the jointly developed rough concept and formulate it into a draft.
- In the design process, the self-defined goals, which were defined in the jointly developed "Pattern Language", are formulated into an urban design.
Covid: The course is designed in such a way that the structure of the course is maintained in case the university prohibits entry. In order to keep the communication between the students and the lecturers uncomplicated and entertaining, "slack.com" and "zoom" are used as means of communication.
workshops: Zoom conferences with about 8 students will be held according to a fixed schedule.
Each 8 students have their own moderated channel in slack.com.
Intermediate presentations/individual corrections: plans and model photos must be submitted in advance. A 3-minute video is to be sent in advance as a presentation. The general feedback will be held via zoom conference. Afterwards, a one-on-one interview (zoom or slack) will be held with each individual according to a fixed schedule.
LVA dates
Sa 3 Oct. 2020 and Mo 5 Oct. 2020 Workshop 1 - Pattern + project language
Collection of problems and themes of the future-oriented (European) city. Developing a common vision. Dividing up complex problems of urban development, examining solutions in a participatory way (getting to know methods of co-determination), jointly formulating generally valid solutions and presenting them as patterns. Combining existing and newly created patterns into a site-specific focused project language to understand the complexity.
Mo 12 Oct. 2020
Fri 16 Oct. 2020 to Mon 19 Oct. 2020 Workshop 2 - target area/ centering process
Location analysis: Identify strengths (potential) + weaknesses (problems) of the planning area in relation to the city as a whole. This is done by taking into account the newly developed pattern and the current themes of the city. (the social city, the mixed city, the productive city, the resilient city, the city of short distances, the open society, the growing city, land consumption, the overheated city, ecology of the city, the polycentric city)
Fri 6 Nov. 2020 to Mon 9 Nov. 2020 Workshop 3 - participatory design process
What must be done to improve the overall situation?
With the help of the patterns and the project language a participatory design process is moderated and started
Use of the project language in the design process
Monday 23. Nov. 2020 Concept presentation - rough concept
