After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on complex urban challenges with regards to sustainable urbanism and in particular the topic of food resilience. The students will be able to conduct independent research by the help of the Research by Design methodology. Furthermore, the students will develop basic theoretical knowledge on the concept of food resilience and will be able to develop a design solution, express this solutions visualy, and present it to the audience.
This urban design course engages with the topic of local food production in the peri-urban fringe conditions of Vienna and its related food supply chains. By the help of a spatial analysis and an urban flow analysis the students will develop an urban design strategy and/or a local design intervention to support the resilient and sustainable local food production and distribution. The Covid-19 pandemic once more highlights the importance of local production in times of uncertainty and global crisis.
But even regardless of the current crisis: Short supply chains, circular urban flows and sustainable land occupation patterns/urban infrastructure, combined with prevention of constant loss of biodiversity are essential components for the future-proof and climate-adaptive city. Students are invited to explore this topic through the lenses of Urban Design and will be encouraged to respond by the development of an urban design solutions.
