After the fall of the communism in 1990, Albania went through a phase of chaotic, intensive, informal, and radical urbanization. The rediscovered possibilities of free demographic movement caused overpopulated urban areas, the abandon of rural ones and brought along social and economic imbalances.
Therefore, central and local governments, planning agencies and policy makers are facing new challenges and approach them with holistic, sustainable, and participatory approaches.
After focusing on the First National Spatial Plan, Albania 2030, and urban acupuncture renewal - the Albanian Government and National Territorial Planning Agency in collaboration with local universities set up an ambitious initiative aiming at the integrated rural development of Albania focusing on 100 beautiful villages throughout the country. The aim of the 4-year program is to:
- Support local farmers, communities and their authentic products, diversified economic activities, vocational training, agritourism
- Guide the restoration of cultural heritage monuments and traditional architecture
- Improve infrastructure and bring an added value. The intent is to create resilient-sustainable models and touristic attractions.
The studio will focus on research and documentation through mappings, drawings and other modes of recording the landscapes and rural areas as well as on the design of spatial strategies for the chosen villages in order to add contributions to the local initiatives by students and professionals.
