Under the title „SIMPLY MULTIPLE - why multiple use and temporary use is so important and how it works“ the coordination center for multiple use of the city of Vienna, whose director Jutta Kleedorfer was for 20 years, prepared and considered experiences in the context of new social trends such as coworking.
In the winter semester 2018/19 the architectural questions, which are connected with multiple use, should be deepened on the basis of specific places and tasks. Considerations on the preferable use of areas, spaces and objects over time (from 24 hours to decades) are the focus and generate the architectural questions that should be answered on different scales.
After about three weeks and a short introduction to the topic you have to choose between the three following tasks:
- Search for interpretable archetypes in the sense of Herman Hertzberger and use them with suitable materialization in the context of a concrete building design [from small to large].
- Develop an operational concept for a campus that uses the principles of the sharing economy and propose associated structural changes [from the big picture to the small one].
- Plan prototypically suitable primary and secondary structures for buildings that can accommodate different uses over time. Plan behavior options (real options)
The elaboration is classical in the form of plans or for the better representation of dynamic aspects in form of an animation or a video. You will receive a corresponding training in video production from Alexander Rieck.
Educational objective:
The students know and understand the different possibilities of architecture to make a contribution to the simultaneous multiple use - e.g. with interpretable archetypes in the sense of Herman Hertzberger - as well as the clever use of the built environment.
You apply these competencies to your specific situation:
- on a small scale, in the design of individual elements of a building or
- on a large scale, as part of an area development or
- as a model in the design of primary and secondary structures of buildings for different use
