MEDITERRANEAN ANARCHY
Restructuring the Informal Settlement of Ksamil
The objective of this design studio is supporting the development of an urban strategy for the town of Ksamil, that addresses the local challenges and builds on the opportunities of the town by means of participatory urban planning.
Ksamil is a town located on the south shore of the Ionian Sea close to the Greek border, with 10,000 registered inhabitants, though only 3,000 are estimated to live in the settlement all year round. Ksamil is a popular destination for summer tourism, (up to 70.000 inhabitants in July and August). Pristine and crystal-clear water are the natural assets of the town. However, the build structure nowadays is characterized by informal patterns, causing difficulties regarding the public spaces and urban development. Most importantly, Ksamil is located within the natural protection area around the former Roman city of Butrint (UNESCO heritage). This fact is quite in conflict with the current situation.
The aim of this studio is to define an urban strategy, including implementable urban projects as catalyzers for the short and mid-term development of the town. The studio methodology is cooperation-oriented and will start with a joint workshop together with students from POLIS University in Tirana, taking place in Ksamil at end of October 2018. The studio is part of a World Bank financed UDL (Urban Design Lab) and the results will become part of the project documentation.
