After successful completion of the course, students are able to recognise complex social conditions and processes as influencing factors for urban development. They have the competence to make connections and conflicts intellectually and emotionally comprehensible and to explain them.
The students are put into a fictitious situation within the framework of a business game, which is based on a realistic social scenario. The course of a business game is divided into an introductory phase, the actual game and the processing. The game is based on a theme-related story in which there are several game groups, each with their own interests and goals. Each group only knows its subjective part of reality. In the induction phase the students get to know their role. From this initial situation, the players begin to act and try to assert their interests. There is no central "stage" on which the events take place, but all groups are active at the same time and in parallel, phases of the group-internal consultation and action times alternate. They use the same methods that they use in reality: Conversations, negotiations, discussions, information gathering, role acting. In the phase of reflection, which is carried out in the form of mutual research, the actual connections and processes open up. This increases the understanding for the real processes or strategies of the participants simulated in the game. The "thematic connection" can focus on various aspects of the reality depicted: settlement development, citizen participation, communication techniques, ...
