Subject of course

The role-play is a means of simulating complex social relationships and processes, in order to grasp intellectually and emotionally interrelationships and conflicts. The course of the play is structured as follows: the starting-, the actual game and the consolidation (grasping) phase. Students are set in a fictional situation, which is based on a realistic social scenario. The basis of the play is a theme-related story, in which there are various playing groups with their respective interests and objectives. Each group knows only its subjective viewpoint of the reality. In the starting phase, the participants get to know their roles. From their perspective, they start to act and try to impose their interests. There is no central stage on which the events unfold, rather, all groups act simultaneously and similarly. Phases of inner group work alternate with a period of actions. Students use methods, which are applied in reality: conversations, negotiations, discussions, data collection, and act according to a preset role. The actual interrelations and course of actions, unravel in the phase of reflection, which is performed in a cross examination pattern. Consequently, an understanding for the real process and the strategies of the participants, which are simulated in the play becomes apparent. The thematic association of the seminar highlights various aspects of the exposed reality: development of settlements, participation of citizens, communication skills.
