Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to independently carry out the entire process of a planting design within a landscape architecture project.

This course provides for studends of architecture basic knowledge of plants and their applications, and shows how vegetation can be used in various planning tasks for both urban settings and open landscapes. A focus of the course is the provision of practice-oriented insights on different types of plants, their role in open space design and their different uses. A main topic is the selection of plants for specific sites, as well as consequences with regard to care and maintenance. Further topics are the planting of roofs and facades, and their effects on microclimate. Insights on the potential role of vegetation in planning projects are also fostered by observing changing vegetation patterns between seasons and over the years.

The course is a supplementary lecture in the module Open Space and Landscape.

Subject of course

In addition to a broad introduction to open space design and vegetation planning, different plant groups such as treees, shrubs, hedges, climbing plants, perennials, and grasses are introduced und discussed in the context of practical application examples. Covered topics are, inter alia, suited tree species for extreme sites along roads and the "Schwammstadt"-principle, plant selection for rooftops and green facades, rain water management with plants, tree protection, general guidelines of plant usage and the analysis of vegetation plans.

The course is augmented with individual practical excursions.
