EXKURSION SEMSROTH:

First part: Friday 29.03.2019, 14:00–17:00 h     Vienna Mélange: New and Old The historic center of Vienna is listed as UNESCO world cultural heritage – contemporary architecture meets the challenge with surprising new inserts, in gaps and interiors, in basements and on rooftops. The tour starts with a short outline of the urbanistic development from the roman origins till today. The walk crosses the center, passing by some of the most suggestive squares and streets. Modernism is present with landmarks of architectonic renewal, such as the postal savings bank by Otto Wagner or the Haus am Michaelerplatz by Adolf Loos. Themes: On the banks of the canal – the river as waterway and leisure area; new buildings on the „waterfront“; Simultanuous city – medieval lanes, baroque churches and modern buildings side by side; from St. Stephen’s Cathedral to Hofburg palace – central pedestrian area with iconic buildings (Wagner, Chipperfield); the great axis: Imperial Forum and the Ring – urban growth and representation at the end of 19th century; MuseumsQuartier: over 60 cultural institutions in the former imperial stables and 3 new buildings.   Meeting point: U1 and U4 station Schwedenplatz, corner Hafnersteig 2-4     Second part Friday, 03.05.2019, 09:00–11:00 Uhr St. Marx becomes Neu Marx: layerings and voids, gaps and clashes Since the 13th century, when a hospital with a St. Marcus church was built here, this area had many different functions for the city of Vienna – among others with the slaughterhouse (19th cent.) and the location for the largest alternative culture and communication center (Arena, since 1976). Presently, the area is marked by a city highway passing over it, the cattle market hall (listed monument), the T-Center from 2004 by Architekturconsult (Günther Domenig), subsidized housing, clusters for media production and for biotechnology and a free plot of appr. 45.000m2, which recently has been designated for a new event space for 20.000 persons. The heterogeneity of the existing and projected functions is a vivid example for the challenges of a growing city.   Meeting point: U3 station Schlachthausgasse, exit Markhofgasse

At the end of the two excursions, reports must be drawn up that firstly depict and describe the buildings and projects viewed, and secondly make a personal assessment from a technical point of view. Participation and reports will be graded.

The excursion examples will be among others. technically by Mrs. Architect Konecny explained.

For each of the two excursions is a contribution to expenses of each € 10,00 required, which will be collected on the spot.

The registration takes place via a registration list which is in the TISS from 8 to 22, March

Subject of course

Direct experience of urban design situations, is indispensable to teaching urban design. The excursions serve as a means to study closely particular settings on the ground. Trips have as their ultimate goal the development of skills in perception. They are meant to convey clearly to students a repertoire of possibilities for comparison and judgment. Preferable destinations are significant historical urban achievements, but also, locations, which exhibit contemporary tendencies in urban design.
