Growth in the urban fringe - open space under pressure
Safeguarding/Securing, development and management of multifunctional open areas in the urban fringe
The city is growing and the open space in the urban fringe becomes an important speculation object. The urban fringe consists of urban and green fragments that seem to be scattered without any specific logic or order. Areas with different urban qualities build up a mosaic of manifold usage forms and potentials. However, pressure on these open spaces is increasing, while they fulfill important tasks in urban structure: open space areas in the urban fringe provide places for local recreation, production places for local food and places fulfilling climatic and ecologic functions in the cities as well. It might be a challenge to develop these agricultural areas towards future by applying existing planning instruments.
Aim of the course is to develop management strategies for open and green space in the urban fringe. A comparison between two urban fringe areas regarding the recent situation of open space, of planning instruments and planning practice will lead to operational models/concepts for the further usage of multifunctional areas in the urban fringe. Furthermore, future development scenarios and detailed management concepts for selected partial areas will have to be developed.
The lecture will inform about the theoretical background, analyzing methods and tools, which will have to be applied autonomous by the students in the two selected urban fringe example areas.
