Vermessung der Stadtlandschaft

In Vienna, but also in general, the questions on how to conceptualise the city rise: as a natural phenomenon, that corresponds to natural conditions and develops as an architectural composite according to its own logics; or as an architectural composition, thus as a consciously created entity. This essential question initiates our engagement with the city and based on the knowledge obtained throughout the course, we will come back to this issue at the end of the semester.

Under the heading <<Vermessung der Stadtlandsschaft>> the courses ¿ Studio Urban Design ¿ and ¿Introduction to Landscape Architecture¿ 2015/16 builds a test series, to explore specific as well as general peculiarities of the Viennese urban fabric. We will visit places to investigate their spatial structures and ecological qualities as well as their social conditions.

We are interested in built and unbuilt manifestations of the city and its hidden or ostensible complexity. We aim to reveal possible future images and development scenarios of a dynamic and growing urban landscape including its concrete shape.

• Training and awareness of perception and analyses of (project-design) localities; developing an individual and holistic understanding of the city.

• Ability to develop and visualise analyses of urban spaces.

• Application of appropriate interpretations-schemes including the ¿translation¿ into (spatial) urban design proposals.

• Development of sustainable urban structures including corresponding open and green spaces (spatial interpretations and interventions, structural programming, integration of ecological issues).

The developed spatial concepts and designs are the most important result of the coupled course and should build on the work of analysis, as well as reflect, question and respond to the obtained knowledge.

Students, taking part in both courses, studio urban design AND studio spatial design should not register for studio spatial designs Team B to avoid a conflicting schedule!

The registration will be split in 2 Phases:

Phase 1 - registration for the course - 24.09 12:00 until 27.09. 22:00

Only people fulfilling the qualifications (see below) can register for the course. By registering on time, you will be able to choose a group in phase 2. 

Phase 2 - registration for a group - 28.09. 19:00 until 01.10. 22:00
