General topic 2012:
The Post_Socialist_Metropolis between top-down and bottom-up
Theoretical part
Two decades after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the current global economic crisis currently slows down a so far quite dynamic urban development process in Central and Eastern European Countries. At the same time, the region is getting all prepared for two large-scale events that both constitute an enormous potential as well as challenges for the respective city regions: the European Football Championship in the Ukraine and Poland
2012 and the 22nd Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014.
In the midst of these urban development dynamics in Eastern Europe it is clearly comprehensible that these cities have been and still are exposed to dynamic operations of national and international private sector investors. Yet these investors hardly have any interest in integral urban development but are above all profit-oriented. This situation though still faces numerous urban planning challenges: immense backlog demands on the housing market and urban infrastructure, negligence of the public space, weak steering mechanisms and hardly any existing public relations for urban development themes.
We will specifically look at current urban development issues and examine their relevance for Central and Eastern European cities.
