After successful completion of the course, students are able to deal creatively with the design of modern prefabricated constructive elements, their combinability and architectonic use.
The objective of the Design Studio is the development of combinable construction elements forming a modular construction system, with the objective of building flexible SMART-Dwellings.
The focus will be on the potential of industrial prefabrication of construction elements, in order to optimize construction costs and time.
The following assumptions are made:
- Prefabrication can reduces emission (dust, noise, etc.) and therefore perturbances for neighbours in the near of the construction site.
- Modern prefabrication allows the serial production of flexible elements that can be individualized if necessary with little production effort.
- Sustainability construction concepts like adaptation, design for disassemble, recovery and reuse of components and materials, as well as recyclability, are also objectives.
The compliance with building physics requirements for the design of SMART-Dwellings of different types and sizes, and the combination of a limited catalogue of constructive elements for making this possible, are key issues to take into account in this design studio.
In the frame of the initiative "Wohnbau-offensive" several competitions were organised by Wohnfonds-Wien. The objective is to make possible the fast building of affordable social houses taking into account the necessary quality criteria.
The programm of SMART-Dwellings in 22., Waldrebengasse has the objective of offering affordable housing for young families, couples, single parents and singles taking into account four principles: economy, social sustainability, architecture and ecology.
SMART-Dwellings are characterised by:
- Optimum use of the surface-area (both for dwellings and service areas)
- Ellaborted, compact and flexible plans
- Mixed flat and dwelling types (social sustainability)
- Flexibility of configuration
- Intelligent and flexible use of construction components.
