Aim of course

These days, Joseph Frank is celebrated at various exhibitions in Vienna. He had a unique aproach to architecture: as opposed to his ilk -like le Corbusier or several repreesentatives of the Bauhaus, Frank was against modern standardization but also against the notion of Gesamtkunstwerk.

He wanted to place the human being in the center of his designs and demanded an unpathetic "normal" simplicity. hence, he rejected any kind of normative formgiving or any formalism in architecture and design. In 1958 he wrote an essay where he suggested accidentism instead- claiming chance is an essential quality of those place where humans like to be, where everybody feels comfortable.

Subject of course

In this design studio we want to analyze whether Frank's unusual and prgamatic approach to design is still valid. Therefore we want to take a look at his designs and his ideas and transfer the key issues into contemporary design. Following his footsteps we want to create an architectural object and develop digital and analogue models.

Additional information

We offer an excursion to Sweden from June 9-12.
