The Swedish town Umeå has been appointed European Capital of Culture 2014 - going by the motto of Curiosity and Passion — the art of co-creation. The department of Architecture Theory will prepare in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in Vienna an exhibition to the event to draw attention to the designated European Capital of Culture and explore relations between Austrian and Swedish culture. The students of this design course will design an installation that will be shown in this exhibition. The final design will be reached by team work including production and construction.
The course will rethink the term creation: architectural production has shifted in recent years - away from a preconception of form through the genius hand of the architect - to a deeper interest in emerging formations and processes of materialisation. The results often show “performative” qualities, not only in terms of structural or climatic behaviour, but also in the way they interact with their environment. We will be exploring bottom-up phenomena and investigate alternative material systems. Our interest will be their ability to re-create themselves and change, to cope with changing contexts and adapt.
Students will be asked to participate in the international conference “Resisting Expression” at the Steinhaus in Carinthia (organized by UCLA).
Students taking this course must have solid skills in 3d software!
The design course will be led by Kristina Schinegger and Stefan Rutzinger (www.soma-architecture.com) and Mathias Mitteregger
