Moving Images – Medialising Yourself with MeaningThis seminar forms part of the Pitching for Architects tandem, together with Talking Courses // Sprechen Hilft. They are both geared towards helping you as a young architect to ‘sell’ yourself, without selling out…
You live in a medially saturated world: images, videos, podcasts, vlogs, all socially networked, commented on, liked or disliked, appreciated or dismissed. As an architect you are used to, and schooled in, designing objects, giving them form in visual and physical representation. But how about yourself? How do you position yourself in this flood of mediality? How do you express your work? Not just illustrate it, not just showit, in an aesthetically pleasing manner, but get to the essence of it? How do you define a visual style, not of your architecture, but of the projection of your architecture, through the lens of your own eye? The aim of this course is to explore, in practice and in observation; how you can medialise yourself with meaning.
By looking at some, but mostly creating our own, motion pictures, we will examine how makers of objects – architects, artists, sculptors – speak to us through their work in video and film. We want to see how existing footage communicates existing work, how we perceive and interpret, with our own means, the existing work of others, and then also how we can project our vision, our intention, our proposition of work that is yet to be made into the mind and understanding of our audience – our fellowarchitects, our clients, the public – through moving images. No special equipment, sophisticated tools or professional software are required for this course: you need access to and be able to handle (or willing to experiment with) any device of your choice that can capture moving images. Whether that is your smartphone, a prosumer level camcorder, a DSLR camera or an old analogue super-8 camera is up to you. Bear in mind simply that you have to, as part of the course, createseveral edited pieces of projectable video. You do not need any experience in video or film editing either. You simply need access to and be able to handle (or willing to experiment with) any basic editing application that allows you to cut together moving images on your computer or on your phone; there are several that are freely available. (If you want to work with analogue film, you obviously need access to the prerequisite physical editing tools.)
