Aim of course

Basic knowledge of scholarly writing and research methods in architecture:

The goal of the Ringvorlesung is to introduce the students to the idea of research. For the great majority of the listeners this will be the first occasion when the principles, values, or methods of research are explicitly discussed. Many of the students will lack background knowledge and be undecided about the kind of research they might conduct later in the context of the “Wahlseminar”. Hence, the course is intended to present a broad overview of different approaches to research, indicating both the wide range of disciplines represented in the faculty and the variety of positions within each discipline.

Subject of course

After  a general introduction to the theme, this lecture series presents different examples of academic research.  Students will be introduced to a number of different approaches to scholarly research  and writing.

a) Introduction

  • Epistemology from Plato to Edward Craig
  • Philosophy and sociology of science (Popper, Kuhn, Latour)
  • Ontology (Interest, Values, Objectivity; Natural Sciences - vs. Humanities)
  • Definition, Argumentation, Refutation
  • Praxis

b) Individual Research Lectures  ( 60 min lecture + 15 min discussion),

Various lectures changing every semester. Each lecture represents a certain field of research with its own methods, values and agendas, including case studies and precise research projects, including fields such as:
