Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

After successfully completing this course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of various crucial aspects within the field of architecture and its significance as infrastructure  in challenging climate conditions. They will delve into the exploration of artificial intelligence (AI) and its pivotal role in fostering sustainable design solutions. Additionally, students will grasp the paramount importance of system-based design methodologies in creating more adaptable and innovative technologies. This course will be conducted in Izmir, Turkey, in collaboration with the Izmir Institute of Technology's Department of Architecture, leveraging the region's arid and hot climate, as well as its coastal proximity, for hands-on prototyping experiments.

Students are tasked with designing and developing scalable discrete systems that can serve as water harvesting, water irrigation, and evaporative cooling systems. One exceptional design will be selected for further refinement and prototyping during the workshop. This course is offered in conjunction with Design Studio 259.069 and serves as an extension of the explorations conducted throughout the semester. It provides interested students with an experimental platform in Izmir.

The Izmir Institute of Technology is located very close to the beach, and we aim to establish a social environment with students who are eager to push boundaries while also being enthusiastic about socializing. We are highly motivated to explore these topics together with you and enjoy two weeks of summer.

Subject of course

For two intensive weeks, students will be accommodated in the university's student residence on campus. We will investigate the local climatic conditions and explore the region and its relationship with water and water management through excursions.

In addition, local architects will be invited to participate in discussion rounds to discuss the topics in a social atmosphere.

In an immersive atmosphere, we will design, conduct research, and carry out 1:1 constructive experiments.
