Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to develop the skills necessary to strategically set information goals before construction, considering onsite measurements and stakeholder interests. They will gain an understanding of various methodologies for integrating data to generate new architectural solutions, exploring how data is managed and formatted for readable and transferable outputs. Furthermore, students will be proficient in utilising specific software to create form and daylighting studies, demonstrating critical thinking by identifying limitations, advantages, and disadvantages. The ability to produce simplified energy models for designs and propose optimization solutions will also be a key focus, with findings reported in a presentable and quantifiable manner.

Subject of course

The course explores various methodologies for integrating data to generate innovative architectural solutions, emphasising how data is managed and formatted for clear and transferable outputs. In addition, students will become proficient in utilising specialised software, empowering them to create impactful form and daylighting studies. Through practical exercises, critical thinking skills will be used as students identify the limitations, advantages, and disadvantages associated with these tools. A significant aspect of the course is the focus on producing simplified energy models and proposing optimization solutions, with findings meticulously presented in a clear, presentable, and quantifiable manner. This course offers a dynamic learning experience, ensuring that students are well-equipped with practical skills and a deep understanding of data integration in architectural design.

The course will take place on Thursdays from 11:00, with the first session on Thursday, March 7th 2024.

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures, tutorials and exercises. The practical acquisition of the contents will be made via homework tasks and corresponding deliverables. Lectures in this course will provide a comprehensive overview of the significance of data-driven architecture, emphasising the central role of understanding the required data before designing and constructing a building. Tutorials will offer practical guidance, aiding students in the process of identifying and collecting specific data, ensuring they grasp the necessary steps needed for successful decision-making and design in architecture. Through exercises, students will actively apply their knowledge by engaging in hands-on activities related to data integration, reinforcing their understanding of how pre-construction data is fundamental to the success of architectural projects.
