2024W, VU, 2.0h, 2.5EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.5
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to identify and utilise datasets commonly used in data-driven design processes. In particular, the use of open-access databases containing geospatial data and its integration with parametric design processes will be presented in this course. Students will learn how to link parametric design techniques with geospatial analysis methods.

Subject of course

The course will provide fundamental knowledge on utilising data in the design processes addressing the intersection of architectural and spatial planning scales. Lectures and exercises will focus on the aspects related to the role and use of data in parametric design processes. At the same time, students are offered a hands-on introduction to the techniques used in parametric design in architecture, interdisciplinary data structuring and deriving data with geospatial analysis tools.

 Topics:

  •  Introduction to data-driven design approaches in architecture
  • Data sources and databases in data-driven design

  • Geospatial (GIS) analysis as a data source in architectural design

  • Data structuring and integration in parametric design approaches

Teaching methods

Content will be delivered through lectures, discussions, in-class hands-on work and homework assignments. The performance assessment is carried out in written and oral form.
