Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

to read, understand, rethink and visually convey spatial facts. They have cognitive and manual drawing skills to represent real and imaginary spaces and can communicate their ideas visually.

Here you will develop central basic skills for subsequent courses and for the practice of architectural planning:

Observation: You will discover the properties of objects, light and space by recording observations precisely. You will experience and reflect on dimensional and proportional relationships.
You will also receive practical tips.
Presentation: You will overcome problems and typical errors in spatial imaging and make good decisions for effective representation. You master the composition of spatial images by consciously dealing with the detail of the image.
To do this, you use graphic design tools in a targeted manner and select suitable media.
Rooms, objects and people are presented by you in a powerful visual statement.
Think spatially: You train the ability to think three-dimensionally in space.
and learn to put your thoughts on paper or in another suitable medium
and to develop further there as well.
Implementing ideas: Finally, you will sketch your own concepts, develop them spatially and finish them. ...

Subject of course

Topics:

Elements of the image: image format, line, area, tonal value, color, position, dimensions, proportions in the image, etc.
Properties of the image: laws of perspective, atmosphere, etc.
Properties in space: spatial structure, dimensions/proportions, light/shadow, surface, etc.
Analog media and techniques: Hand drawing, photography, collage, poster, etc.
    Artistic and aesthetic qualities

Learning content of the exercises on site (with compulsory attendance):

Spatial drawing and presentation: Observation study of spatial facts and their perspective appearance, proportions, proportions, light and shadow effects, colours and surface structures, etc.
Nude drawing: Observation study of the human body and its relation to the surrounding space.
Project work: Here you develop a spatial vision on a given theme. All the exercise units of the semester lead to a pictorial freehand representation that is to be worked out independently and carefully.

Learning contents of the exercises, which are to be compiled independently (self-study):

Deepening exercises: Weekly tasks on topics of perspective freehand presentation (a detailed online tutorial and the weekly tutorial hours provide corresponding assistance).
Project work: The finishing of the project work is to be worked out automatically on the basis of the preliminary work developed in the exercise units.
Exercise book on perspective and sketchbook: Regular freehand drawing should help to compensate for drawing deficits and to acquire and deepen standardised routines of spatial-perspectival representation.

Teaching methods

Methodical course elements (parallel to each other or building on each other):

Lecture: Here you will be introduced to the basics, techniques and insights of artistic practice and you will acquire important basic knowledge for working independently during the exercise units. Student works from previous years give you orientation.
The weekly lecture units are closely coordinated with the practice and form an integral part of the course.
Practice groups: Here you practice the contents presented in the lecture with personal supervision on site in the drawing room.
Advanced exercises: According to the information provided, they can be independently implemented and uploaded on a weekly basis.
Online tutorial: As an aid for self-study, the basics of perspective presentation are extensively explained online and presented step by step in a comprehensible way.
Weekly tutorial with personal support: During a 3-hour tutorial, presentation problems are explained in detail and individual support for self-study is offered.
Perspective exercise book: This will help you to acquire and deepen standardized routines of spatial-perspective representation. In very simple examples, the basic shapes of different bodies are studied in axonometry and perspective at different positions in the image space.
Sketchbook: This accompanies the whole learning process of ZVS1. During this time you should reach for the pencil as often as possible and continuously improve your skills.

Examination modalities

The regular and continuous presence at the drawing exercises on site is a prerequisite for a positive assessment! The presence is recorded by presence lists and marking on the drawing sheets (stamp and/or teacher's signature) prepared during the training unit.

All works of the semester are used for the evaluation: Exercise drawings, in-depth drawings, perspective exercises, sketchbook, nude drawings and project work with preliminary studies.

The following qualities are assessed:

Observation: Sensitivity, accuracy and relevance of reproduction
Graphic of the illustration: Conscious handling of
Lines and areas, light/shadows, colours, atmosphere, surface effects etc.
Techniques and media: suitable choice, effectiveness and craftsmanship quality
Perspective: should be at least plausible.
Picture composition: Conscious handling of the division of the picture surface, quality of the result.
Creativity, originality and vitality in the implementation of your own ideas
Continuous development process of a concept, step by step, in many variants

For a positive final grade, all partial performances must be completed positively. If the mark is negative, the whole semester must be repeated. In the event of a negative assessment of the project work or the consolidation exercises, this partial performance can only be completed again with the agreement and approval of the supervisor by the beginning of the following semester (1 March) at the latest. After this deadline, all partial performances already assessed positively expire and the entire semester content (including all partial performances) must be repeated.
